5 Ways to Reduce Waste in Construction

There’s waste in every construction project; it would be virtually impossible to construct a building without wasting any materials with the construction processes used today. This being said, there are a number of ways to make sure that you are wasting as little as possible. Wasted materials cost more to a construction company than just the cost of hiring a skip; the wasted materials also represent an increased cost for the project. To help you to reduce your construction waste, we’ve got a few tips that you’re sure to find helpful.

 Identify Where Waste Is Happening

It’s likely that different processes of your construction projects are contributing different amounts of waste, with some being particularly bad for it. Identify what is thrown away after each process to uncover which areas are producing more waste than others.

Find Out Why the Waste Is Happening

Once you’ve identified where the waste is coming from you’ll be able to figure out why the waste is happening and if it is avoidable. It is unlikely that there will be no ways at all to reduce the waste being produced so once you know why it is happening you’ll be able to implement some of your ideas. The solution may be staff training, new equipment or using a different supplier.

Avoid One-Size-Fits-All Plans

Each project is different, with different materials being required and different processes needed to turn the whole thing into a finished project. If you don’t tailor your plans exactly to the requirement of each project you’ll always end up with things being wasted.

Try to involve yourself in the early stages of a project to encourage the use of less wasteful designs.

Is it possible for you to reuse some of the wasted materials to avoid just throwing them away? It could be possible for you to collect and use off cuts rather than having to order new materials. If you have no use for the remaining materials yourself, you may be able to return, sell or donate them.

Sometimes materials get wasted because they’re stored on site longer than would be ideal and become unusable. To avoid this, arrange deliveries to match the stages of the project so that materials are only stored onsite as long as they need to be.

Of course, there’ll always be something that you need to dispose of and that’s where we come in.
