Don’t Forget to Recycle Your Christmas Waste

The festive season is very much upon us – it’s only 11 days until Christmas Day!

As we start to spend all our evenings hanging up decorations, wrapping up presents and writing Christmas cards, it’s not hard to imagine the amount of waste that is produced by households throughout the UK. Amongst all the excitement, it can often be easy to forget the three R’s; reduce, reuse and recycle.

It’s always a good thing to be environmentally conscious but definitely at this time of the year when waste is so easily accumulated. Here are a few Christmas recycling tips to get you started.

Recycle Wrapping Paper & Cards

Opened wrapping paper and discarded Christmas cards are probably the biggest culprit of waste during the festive season. It’s important that you dispose of them by the correct means – recycling.

You can recycle paper and cards by putting it in your paper recycling bins. Unfortunately, the metallic type of wrapping that is popular today isn’t as easy to recycle – we advise you to contact your local council to see what can be done with it.

Disposing of Your Christmas Tree

If you’ve chosen to have a real Christmas tree this year instead of an artificial one – you’ll have to dispose of it once Christmas is over and the decorations are packed away for another year. You can do this in several different ways. This includes:

  • Cutting the tree up and putting them into the correct bin for collection.
  • Take it to your local waste and recycling centre – it will be broken down and made into compost.
  • Use it within your garden – it be partly be used for the insects and small creatures that are in your garden.

Tins, Foil, Cans & Plastics

It’s always really important to recycle metal – it actually saves you a lot of energy. Were you aware that recycling just one aluminium can will run your TV for up to three hours?

Therefore, you should separate all metallic and aluminium cans, foil and plastics, into the correct bins so that they can be collected properly. You can recycle the tin foil from around your turkey and the metal foil mince pie cases too – pretty much everything you eat has wrapping that can be recycled.
