New Rules on Recycling Come Into Effect for Scottish Businesses

New regulations on recycling have come into force for Scottish businesses. The new recycling rules require waste from businesses to be separated into paper, card, plastic and glass for collection. According to BBC News The law also states that all businesses in the food industry that produce more than 50kg of food waste each week are required to present it for a separate collection (rural areas are excluded).

Why should you take notice?

As of January 1st 2014 those businesses that have failed to comply with the new rules and regulations risk fines of up to £10,000.  According to the Scottish government and the Zero Waste Scotland agency, businesses should audit their waste to see exactly where it comes from and how it can be better managed.

Waste Management Tips:

1.      Measure how much waste you produce, count how many bins you send out for collection.

2.      Reduce the amount of waste that you send to landfill sites.

3.      Recycle and reuse items where possible.

4.      Hire recycling and waste disposal contractors.

5.      Have separate bins for different materials inside and outside of your business’ premises.
