You Should Skip Putting These Items in Your Skip

A lot of people mistakenly believe that they can put any type of rubbish in their skip. Whilst they are an excellent way of getting rid of stuff that you no longer want or need, there are a few rules that you must follow.

For legal or practical reasons, these items must not be placed in a skip and should be disposed of in a completely different way. If you don’t follow these rules, you could find yourself in trouble with both the company you hired the skip from and the law!

Before you start worrying, we have put together a list of the items that you should definitely not be putting into your skip.

Batteries

Many of you may be unaware that you shouldn’t be putting any type of battery into a skip. This is because they are made from several different metals and chemicals, which means they need to be dealt with separately. You will find that most local supermarkets will have a box for battery recycling, so you can take all of the ones that you don’t want to there, to be properly dealt with.

You also can’t put car batteries in a skip, as they contain lead, which is classed as a poison.

Tyres

It’s against the law to not dispose of tyres properly, and this means that you can’t just dump them in your skip for someone else to deal with. Skip companies aren’t covered to dispose of them, so it must be done yourself.

Most councils won’t allow for tyres to be taken to the tip, and those that do will probably charge a lot of money per tyre. We suggest getting in touch with a local garage and asking if they can take them off your hand.

Electrical Appliances

You shouldn’t put any electrical appliances into a skip, whether it’s a fridge, freezer or television. All electrical items that you no longer want must be taken to a specialised electrical waste facility. They must not be mixed with general waste! You should look online for one nearest to your home.

Gas Cylinders

No skip company will take gas cylinders, even if they are empty. This is because they might have residual content left in them, which can be very dangerous. Skip companies do not have the right license to deal with them, so it must be something you arrange yourself.
