MacMillan Coffee Morning

This year we again participated in the annual MacMillan Coffee morning on the 27th of September. The team baked cakes and brought them in to sell – with the proceeds being donated to MacMillan Cancer Support. They managed to raise an impressive £255 – a huge congratulations to all involved! Below is our Transport Manager, John, showing off some of the cakes he brought in! Head over to MacMillan Cancer Support’s website for more information about the valuable work they do.

Paper Usage

As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce wastage and be more efficient, we have moved away from triplicate paper for our delivery tickets and are now using duplicate paper – cutting down our paper usage by a third! This will work out on average a saving of 1600 sheets of paper per month! Eventually we will be moving away from paper tickets altogether, with plans to use digital tickets only. Watch this space!

Commodity Prices

Commodity prices for recycled materials have been falling over the past few months, mainly due to uncertainty in the market caused by Brexit, the US – China Trade war and lessening demand from the Chinese market. In particular, metal prices have fallen sharply.

Other commodities such as cardboard and plastic have also felt the impact, with rebates on these also dropping dramatically. A large proportion of these recyclables used to be shipped over to China and other Asian countries where they would then be further processed. In Europe, we produce more recyclable waste than we can process meaning that we have to export – the fall in demand from China means we now have a surplus over here, which is the main driving force behind the fall in rebate values.

Renault Demonstrator

We currently have a new Renault demonstrator truck to test! As part of our continous fleet renewal policy, we are constantly looking at areas we can improve the fleet and become more efficient. We only ever buy the trucks that are the most fuel efficient and have the least emmissions. Having a demonstrator like this is really useful for us to measure these things and make an informed decision. The drivers love it too, as they get to try out the latest trucks and put them through their paces!
