UK Summertime is slowly approaching, it’s probably not surprising that you’re already feeling the heat! Unfortunately, it’s likely that your garden is, too.

Don’t fret! We have gathered some tips to keep your garden looking fabulous.

Here at Buchanan Skip Hire, we always see a huge uptick in the numbers of customers who hire a skip for garden waste at this time of year. Obviously, most people would prefer to keep their garden pristine rather than having to chuck large parts of it into a skip – so here are a few pointers on how you can do just that!

Water is the key requirement at the heart of all of a plant’s biology. Plants, like humans, are mostly water, and, just as with humans, keeping cells hydrated is key to maintaining health & development of plants.

Healthy plants are hardier, grow larger, survive longer and produce greater yields.

Deeper watering encourages strong & deep root growth, as the plants adapt to collecting moisture from further below the earth. This sets up your plants for better growth & improved hardiness the rest of the year round.

Before you water, you need to make sure your plants are as thirsty as you think- check the top 4-6 inches of soil around your plants- if this is dry, it’s time for watering.

Some species will require different amounts of water, but if the ground is dried solid to a depth of more than 5 inches, small plants with even very developed root systems will start to become dehydrated.

Try and resist the urge to do it during the day, though. Your plants will generally have a better absorption rate during the evening, so if you can hold off on the job until then, you’ll see the benefits!

Mowing –

raise the height of cut in dry weather to avoid weakening the grasses and let the clippings fall back onto the lawn rather than collecting them. They will act as mulch and slow down the evaporation of water from the soil surface. Make sure the clippings are small, or they will smother the grass and cause damage.

Weeding –

It might seem obvious but weeding is a sure fire way to help your plants survive. Weeds attract pests, diseases and infections making your plants even more susceptible.

Pull out any weeds as soon as you notice them.

Leave your soil alone –

Don’t go digging – Be careful not to over-dig in hot weather when plants are struggling to get enough water. Disturbing your soil will only get rid of moisture.

Once you’ve done all that, of course, it’s always nice to leave the place tidy, isn’t it? Luckily, this part’s pretty simple: just collect all your garden waste into a pile, ready for hiring a skip.
